REFLECTIONS
Experience
These past months has been a significant learning experience as I worked on our typography assignment. Initially, navigating tools in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign felt challenging, especially since I had limited experience with them. While I was somewhat familiar with Illustrator, InDesign was entirely new to me. On top of that, creating my own font from scratch was a separate challenge, as I started by sketching in Procreate, then finalized the design in Illustrator, and transferred it to FontLab. FontLab, being completely unfamiliar, was particularly difficult to navigate. However, with Mr. Max’s guidance and constructive feedback, I learned to use these tools effectively and refine my design. His advice on balancing layouts, simplifying compositions, and adjusting font measurements helped me steadily improve my work.
The design process, from ideation to execution, has been incredibly rewarding. I explored various aspects of digital design, from typography basics to creating more complex layouts. The feedback sessions were especially valuable, helping me identify areas for improvement and refine my projects further. For our portfolio documentation, Mr. Max introduced us to Blogger, where I could reflect on my progress and track the evolution of my ideas. Despite the initial challenges, I’m proud of how far I’ve come—seeing my project evolve from rough sketches to a polished final design was a deeply satisfying experience. This week not only strengthened my technical skills but also deepened my appreciation for the creative process behind typography.
Observation
Through this module, I’ve learned the importance of using references effectively and aligning them with my design goals to refine ideas more effectively. Exploring platforms like Pinterest helped me visualize concepts and gain fresh perspectives, improving my creative process. Typography requires a keen eye for detail, as small adjustments to spacing, alignment, or measurements can greatly enhance a design’s overall impact. I also discovered how rough sketches evolve into polished, structured designs when transitioning through tools like Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Simplifying cluttered layouts in InDesign improved readability and balance, while combining precise measurements with visual judgment allowed me to create a more polished and consistent final product. By focusing on details at every stage, I minimized the need for corrections later, reinforcing the importance of careful planning, precision, and thoughtful execution in achieving professional designs.
Findings
I’ve discovered that even minor adjustments can greatly enhance the impact of a design, and while typography initially seemed challenging, it becomes fascinating once understood. This module has deepened my understanding of composition, font creation, and the historical evolution of typography, helping me appreciate how design elements and typography history influence modern styles. Working in stages proved invaluable for refining designs, as each tool—Procreate, Illustrator, and InDesign—offered unique strengths for experimentation, precise adjustments, and final layouts. Simplifying complex designs and focusing on details, such as spacing and kerning, were crucial for creating clean, effective results. Feedback played a vital role in identifying areas for improvement and guiding designs toward a cohesive outcome. Through this process, I’ve gained a newfound respect for font creation and design, understanding the care and complexity behind the fonts we use every day.
