3. REFLECTION

What have I learnt in this module?

In the beginning of the module, I underestimated the importance of design principles, but after further research, I realized they are essential for creating strong designs. They are heavily used in entertainment design which I plan to take for my course, such as in animated movies and posters, to enhance visual impact. Through this module, I have improved my efficiency in design, making my work more visually appealing with every passing week. The assignment process, where we created our own artwork inspired by an existing one, was particularly helpful in understanding how much a design can improve when the right principles are applied properly. Now, I instinctively analyze everyday designs I come across more closely, breaking down the design principles within them. I have also learned to apply these principles effectively in my own artwork after recognizing the difference they make in creating more impactful designs.

What did I enjoy the most?

I really enjoyed improvising the Coraline movie poster artwork, as it allowed me to think creatively while still following the rules of graphic design for commercial purposes. Throughout this module, I learned new composition techniques such as layering, shadow, edge layout, hierarchy, and, most importantly, juxtaposition, which I struggled with in the beginning. Task 2 was a favorite because it encouraged original ideas and creative freedom, while Task 3 was both challenging and exciting. It pushed me to think more creatively with composition techniques, making the poster more visually appealing. Task 3 also reinforced the idea that even when something looks good, it can always be improved through further experimentation. I enjoyed exploring different ideas and applying design principles like a puzzle, as well as the freedom to use different tools beyond just Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. This flexibility allowed me to create interesting designs using Procreate. Receiving feedback from like-minded people was also motivating, and I valued the opportunity to experiment with design principles through the assignments.

What did I not enjoy the most?

I found Task 1 less exciting because it was more theoretical than practical. And when working on my artwork, I often felt unsatisfied, sensing that something looked wrong but struggling to fix it. The composition either felt too empty or too crowded, and in the beginning, I didn’t fully understand the importance of juxtaposition and layering. However, as I progressed, I started recognizing how these elements could improve my designs.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?

Throughout this module, I became more confident in expressing my ideas and testing concepts through sketching. I also improved my critical thinking and awareness of design’s impact in art. I used to compare my art to more professional work, feeling like mine was lacking something, but I couldn't put my finger on it, but now I see that I lacked knowledge on how to properly use design principles back then. While I still prefer practical work over research, I now recognize that research helps define the aim of a design, making the practical process more effective. I also gained a deeper understanding of how to transform good work into something even better through composition. Learning design concepts also made me more aware of my artistic preferences.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?

One major change is my improved ability to identify what was lacking in my artworks, allowing me to create more engaging designs. I have become more observant and analytical when looking at designs, questioning the purpose of each element and how they contribute to the overall composition. Now, I conduct more research before executing a design, making my work more meaningful and visually appealing. I used to judge designs only by their appearance, but now I analyze them deeply and think critically about their intent. However, I do still sometimes feel that something is off in my artwork but struggle to pinpoint exactly what it is.

What are my aspirations?

I hope to continue improving and applying what I’ve learned from this module in my future work, whether it takes hours or days to perfect. I look forward to gaining bigger opportunities and motivation to refine my skills before sharing them with a wider audience. The lessons from this module will serve as a strong foundation, guiding me to create better, more impactful work—whether as an artist or even a graphic designer.
