    REFLECTION

    Experience
This semester, working on the typographic system exercises, merging personal identity into branding, and designing a full typeface pushed me through many challenges and rewarding moments. I spent significant time exploring design systems, sketching and digitizing in Procreate and paper, and experimenting with layout and structure in InDesign. Merging my personal style with a deeper exploration of identity tested my ability to balance creativity with clarity, especially when creating wordmarks and applying them across brand collaterals under tight deadlines. The final project was fast-paced and technical, involving font creation in FontLab 8, adjusting side bearings, and developing consistent letterforms, which helped me gain valuable new skills and confidence in both software and type design.

    Observations
Throughout the semester, I noticed that each typographic system and font has unique characteristics, with subjective preferences varying greatly among peers, emphasizing the importance of feedback and group discussion in evolving ideas. Researching brand logos and wordmarks taught me how simplicity, shape, and color communicate personality and identity effectively, especially on platforms like Instagram. Observing classmates’ work highlighted how small adjustments can enhance clarity and meaning. I also learned that consistent letterforms, grids, and readability are essential for a font to feel cohesive and for presentations to showcase work without distraction, reinforcing that good design is rooted in a thoughtful process as much as the final outcome.

    Findings
These projects deepened my understanding that good design is a balance of creativity, structure, clarity, and purpose, whether in typographic systems, branding, or typeface design. I realized the importance of testing and refining ideas to ensure they work visually and conceptually. Branding requires clear, meaningful visual communication that resonates simply yet deeply with the audience. In type design, accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail are crucial, and simple-looking fonts often require complex, purposeful decisions. Overall, I learned that design must bridge expression and usability, grounded in research and thoughtful choices to communicate effectively in diverse contexts.
