3. PROCESS WORK

In Task 3, we were required to create a splash art for our character based on the final pose that had already been developed. Sir Fitri provided several examples to explain the purpose of splash art, as well as to illustrate the overall aesthetic, composition, and visual impact commonly used in splash art design.

3.1 Research

I began by researching Bali’s environment to identify elements that I wanted to highlight in the splash art. From the start, I knew I wanted to incorporate fire as a key visual element, along with Barong-related motifs to reinforce the character’s cultural identity. To support this, I researched Balinese stages and traditional performances and collected visual references for a mood board that informed the background and overall atmosphere of the splash art. Sir Fitri also recommended incorporating janur elements to help frame the character within the composition and enhance the cultural context.

3.2 Thumbnail Sketches of Character Backdrop

I produced six different thumbnail sketches exploring various character backdrop compositions. Sir Fitri favored the concept of the third sketch and particularly liked the floor pattern used in the fourth option. He recommended using Janur elements on the right side of the composition to frame the character, while incorporating fire on the left side to balance and frame the opposite side. Additionally, he suggested adjusting the floor tiles so they appear larger and thicker in the foreground and gradually smaller toward the background to enhance depth and perspective.

Sir Fitri's Feedback sketch

After completing the splash art, I presented it to Sir Fitri for feedback. He suggested enhancing the lighting on the character to help it stand out more prominently from the background. He also recommended adding a shadow behind the character to further separate the figure from the environment and improve overall visual clarity and depth.

5. FEEDBACK

Sir Fitri emphasized the importance of ensuring the character design closely aligned with the Overwatch visual style. He noted that the initial silhouette was too simple and encouraged more outfit and silhouette exploration, particularly developing the Barong as a robotic mask to strengthen both cultural identity and visual impact. In later iterations, he acknowledged improvements in silhouette clarity and favored the selected color palette for its strong anti-hero tone, while also recommending deeper research into Overwatch’s use of color, materials, and overall character cohesion.

For the splash art, Sir Fitri focused on composition and visual clarity. He suggested using elements such as janur and fire to frame the character, adjusting floor patterns to enhance depth and perspective, and improving lighting so the character would stand out more clearly from the background. He also recommended adding shadows to better separate the character from the environment, with the overall goal of achieving a more polished and professional presentation.

6. REFLECTIONS

Experience

During this task, I found the splash art process both challenging and rewarding. Having a finalized character pose helped streamline the workflow, allowing me to focus more on composition, lighting, and atmosphere rather than redesigning the character itself. The research and thumbnail stages were especially important, as they helped me explore different ways to frame the character and convey action and intensity. Feedback from Sir Fitri was valuable in refining the composition, particularly in improving lighting, depth, and character separation from the background.

Observation

I observed that effective splash art relies heavily on strong composition and visual balance. Elements such as lighting, foreground and background separation, and framing objects like fire and janur play a crucial role in directing the viewer’s attention to the character. I also noticed that small adjustments, such as adding shadows or refining perspective in floor patterns, can significantly improve depth and overall visual clarity, making the artwork feel more dynamic and professional.

Findings

From this task, I learned that thorough research and thumbnail exploration are essential before moving into final splash art production. Mood boards and cultural references helped strengthen the artwork’s identity and atmosphere, while iterative feedback helped refine technical aspects such as lighting and composition. Overall, I found that successful splash art requires a balance between visual storytelling, cultural elements, and clear focal emphasis on the character.
