UNIQUE SELLING POINT
Defining the Anchor: Every environment design needs a core focal feature or "hook" that distinguishes it from generic levels.
Application: Identify what makes the location memorable—such as dramatic storytelling elements, unique lighting setups, environmental contrasts (e.g., overgrown tech), or key hero props—before modeling.
SHORTCUTS - PHOTOSHOP
Shortcut & Menu Path: Go to Filter > Vanishing Point (or hit Ctrl + Alt + V). Holding Ctrl allows you to pull connected perpendicular planes out from an existing perspective grid.
Use Case: Allows you to map textures, posters, graphics, or painted details flat onto defined perspective planes so they automatically scale, skew, and compress along the correct perspective lines.
ASSET BREAKDOWN STRATEGY
Modular Production List: Deconstruct the environment sketch or concept art into individual buildable parts before starting 3D modeling.
Categorization Pipeline:
- Architecture/Kitbash: Walls, floors, pillars, door frames (tileable, snap-to-grid pieces).
- Hero Props: Unique, detailed assets placed in focal areas.
- Scatter/Foliage Props: Repeating detail items like rocks, crates, debris, or vegetation.
COLORING
Color Contrast: Keep key props and character asset colors distinct from background/environment values so they don't blend in or get lost.
MoodBoard
After completing the exterior design, I shifted my focus to the interior environment. From the beginning, I envisioned a large serpent statue as the primary focal point and main environmental asset. This concept was inspired by adventure films such as Indiana Jones and various exploration-based games, where ancient temples feature iconic landmarks that reinforce the atmosphere of mystery and discovery. Establishing this central asset helped define the composition, storytelling, and visual identity of the interior environment.
For the sketching stage, I explored different camera angles and scale variations for the temple's interior. I created several design iterations to determine the most effective composition and to emphasize the grandeur and atmosphere of the space. This exploration allowed me to evaluate how perspective, scale, and spatial arrangement could strengthen the visual impact and guide the player's attention within the interior environment.
After consulting with Sir Kannan regarding the composition, I proceeded with a 3D blockout to establish the overall layout more accurately. This approach allowed me to refine the environment's scale and perspective while gaining a clearer understanding of the spatial relationships between the major forms. The blockout also helped me evaluate the overall shape language before moving on to the detailed modeling stage.
Value Studies
For the value studies, I focused on the lighting produced by one of the key props used in the temple interior—the torches placed throughout the environment. This study allowed me to examine how the torchlight interacted with the surrounding architecture, determining the intensity of the shadows, the light falloff, and the reflected light across different surfaces. Understanding these value relationships helped me create a more believable lighting setup while reinforcing the atmosphere and depth of the interior environment.
Ambience Studies
For the ambience study, I focused on creating a strong color contrast between the warm yellow-orange glow of the torchlight and the cool blue tones of the night. This combination enhanced the mood and atmosphere of the temple while emphasizing the focal areas within the environment. Using Blender's lighting tools, I carefully adjusted the light intensity, shadows, and bounced light to achieve more natural illumination and realistic light interactions across the surrounding surfaces.
4. FINAL OUTCOME
5. FEEDBACK
Sir Kannan emphasized the importance of having a strong unique selling point, which led me to make the large serpent statue the main focal point of the temple interior. He also guided me through the composition and 3D blockout process, helping me refine the scale, perspective, and spatial relationships between the major elements. For the value and ambience studies, I was encouraged to study how the torchlight interacts with the environment and use stronger colour contrast, particularly between the warm orange-yellow lighting and cool blue surroundings, to improve the atmosphere and visual hierarchy.
EXPERIENCE
This stage allowed me to develop the interior environment from an initial idea into a more structured 3D space. Creating the blockout helped me understand the scale and perspective of the temple, while the lighting studies gave me more experience with creating atmosphere in Blender.
OBSERVATION
I observed that having a strong focal point makes it much easier to build the composition around it. The serpent statue naturally became the main focus, while the surrounding architecture, lighting, and colour were arranged to support it rather than compete with it.
FINDINGS
I found that lighting and colour can greatly change how an environment feels even when the 3D structure remains the same. The contrast between the warm torchlight and cool blue surroundings helped give the temple a stronger identity and made the interior feel more mysterious and atmospheric.
